Why you'll never be a profitable trader until you fix your position size
Most traders think their problem is being wrong. Flow shares a passage that argues the real problem is position size — bet small enough to survive, and you can outlast your own mistakes.
Most traders think their biggest problem is being wrong. It isn't — it's size. Flow shares a passage that hammers one idea: "if your size is wrong, you are finished; if your size is right, you can survive even your mistakes." Bet small enough to follow your rules without fear, and you stay in the game long enough to catch the move that matters.
Size is everything
The passage Flow plays makes the case bluntly: "the smaller you bet, the bigger your chances of getting rich; the larger you bet, the quicker your chances of going broke." The beginner believes the opposite — that betting bigger gets him rich faster. But "speculation is a profession, not a lottery," and a profession "requires you to last… to respect your capital more than you respect your opinion."
Small enough to survive the market's tricks
The prescription: "make your position so small that you can take them, cut them, carry them, add to them, all without strain. Make them so small that you can follow your rules without fear… so small that the market cannot shake you out with its tricks." That's how you stay in the game "long enough to see the real move — the move that makes your fortune." (Flow shares this passage; the discipline it teaches is the point.)
