How Google makes money: it's selling attention, not search
Google gives away search, Maps, Gmail, and YouTube — and still prints money. The trick: the free products harvest attention and intent, and advertisers pay for that at the moment it's valuable.
Google gives its products away for free and still prints money because its real product isn't search — it's access to human attention at the moment that attention becomes valuable. Search, Maps, Gmail and YouTube attract billions of moments of attention and intent; advertisers pay precisely when people are searching, watching, or preparing to buy. The free tools are the bait; the attention is the business.
The free products are the funnel
It looks like generosity — free email, free maps, free video. It's actually the most valuable ad funnel ever built. Every search and watch is a signal of intent, and intent is what advertisers will pay a premium to reach. Understanding this reframes Alphabet as an attention-and-intent business, which is why its economics are so durable: as long as people bring Google their attention, advertisers will keep paying for it.
