The story so far
- The machine — YouTube runs ads on creator content before creators even qualify to get paid, and never has to fund the cameras, scripts, or videos. YouTube Shorts alone is ~200 billion views a day (per YouTube's CEO) — an enormous, low-cost attention engine.
- July 22, 2026 — Alphabet's Q2 2026 report: capital expenditures doubled year over year to ~$44.9 billion, outrunning ~$39.1 billion of operating cash flow (free cash flow turned negative); Alphabet raised its 2026 capex plan to about $195–205 billion. Shares fell on the capex surge.
- The open question — whether Alphabet's AI spending produces profitable growth, or just growth. That's the difference between a great company and a good stock.
