The $25,000 Tesla options mistake: not wrong, just no time
Flow put $25,000 into short-dated Tesla calls and gave the trade one week. The stock didn't get there in time, and the money was gone. The fix isn't a better guess — it's more time.
Flow lost $25,000 on Tesla calls not because the direction was wrong, but because he gave the trade no time. He bought about a thousand contracts on a roughly one-week horizon, and when Tesla didn't reach his strike that fast, the options expired worthless. His lesson: if you buy options, hold them — "give yourself some time, allow for the stock to breathe." His preferred window is 9 months to 2 years.
Time is the variable beginners underprice
A short-dated option needs the move to happen now; if the stock takes the scenic route, decay eats you alive even when you're eventually right about direction. That's how a $25,000 position goes to zero in a week. The fix is longer-dated contracts (LEAPS) that give the thesis room to play out — Flow's 9-months-to-2-years window — so a slow-but-correct call still pays. Direction is only half the trade; time is the half that quietly kills accounts. Options can expire worthless; educational content, not investment advice.
