Don't let your 401(k) gamble: the retirement rule change to watch

A Trump executive order opens the door to putting 401(k) and IRA money into riskier assets — private equity, crypto, hedge funds. Flow, and a real $250 million cautionary tale, on why 'boring' wins for retirement.

The short version

A 2025 executive order backed by President Trump makes it easier for everyday Americans to put 401(k) and IRA money into riskier "alternative" assets — private equity, crypto, and hedge funds. Flow's warning: retirement savings are exactly where you should be most protected from risk. His rule for retirement money — boring is better, low fees are better, play it safe for the long term. You only get one shot at saving for retirement.

The rule change

Verified: in August 2025, President Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Labor to open 401(k) and IRA plans to "alternative" assets — private equity, cryptocurrency, and real estate — and days later the DOL rescinded prior guidance that had cautioned about private-equity risk. Flow's framing matches: the change makes it easier to put retirement money into "risky, dicier investments" like hedge funds, private equity and crypto. Critics argue retirement savings are exactly where people should be most protected from risk.

A real $250 million warning

Flow's example is real: the Carpenters Trusts of Western Washington lost more than $250 million after their pension was invested in risky hedge funds (managed by Allianz Global Investors), leading to a class action and settlement — and some carpenters had to keep working instead of retiring. As Flow puts it, they didn't just lose money: "they lost the one resource you can never get back — their time."

Why Wall Street wants your retirement money

There's roughly $30 trillion+ set aside by Americans for retirement — "a lot of fees and a lot of income for these firms." Flow's one question before you put retirement money anywhere: "do they need you to win before they get paid?" His bottom line — boring is better, low fees are better, play it safe for the long term.
